  • The doctoral candidates and at least one of the H-BRS advisors are members of the H-BRS GI.
  • The doctoral candidates pursue their degrees in cooperation with a university or are members of the PK NRW and publish with a publisher with which the H-BRS has concluded a DEAL agreement (Springer, Wiley, Elsevier).
  • The H-BRS supervisors must provide a letter of support confirming that they will cover the remaining costs and certifying that no funds are available from a third-party funded project or another source to cover the publication fees.
  • Prior to applying for the grant, the H-BRS library must issue a positive assessment of the publication medium (excluding predatory publishers).
  • The publication has successfully undergone a peer review process.

Note: Are you a doctoral candidate in the Promotionskolleg NRW and planning to publish with a publisher not covered by the H-BRS DEAL agreement (Springer, Wiley, Elsevier)? In that case, you can apply to the Promotionskolleg NRW for funding to cover publication fees. You can find more information on the Promotionskolleg NRW website.

Grant from the Graduate Institute
The GI provides a grant of 700 euros for hybrid open-access publications and 1,000 euros for gold open-access publications, provided funds are available in the current fiscal year.
A grant may be claimed only once per calendar year per doctoral candidate. For a given publication, only one doctoral candidate per research group may receive a grant.

Grant from the Library's Publication Fund
In addition, the H-BRS supports open-access publications by providing partial funding through the Publication Fund. Details on the eligibility criteria can be found on the intranet at Publication Fund

Applying for Grants
To apply jointly, please use the GI application form, which is made available to doctoral students in the LEA course H-BRS Graduate Institute. Once a publication has been accepted, the completed application for an open-access grant should be submitted to the H-BRS GI. A decision on the application will be made promptly and communicated to the applicant.

If a grant is approved, the GI will contribute a proportionate share toward the publication fees. A copy of the approved GI application serves as proof of the open-access grant.
