Jana Caroline Hollenbeck: 3-Hydroxyisobutyrate dehydrogenase (HIBADH) deficiency - a novel disorder in the  metabolism of the amino acid valine

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Once a protein molecule is degraded, many amino acid molecules will undergo catabolism. One of those amino acids is valine.

In this talk a novel disorder of valine degradation will be presented, that results in the accumulation of 3-hydroxyisobutyric acid in urine. Two children with 3-hydroxyisobutyrate dehydrogenase deficiency, due to mutations in the HIBADH gene, will be reported and underlying mechanisms will be discussed.
