The course consists of:
Lecture: 4 lesson hours per week
Laboratory course: 2 lesson hours per week;

7 ECTS

_____________________________

Application of forensic DNA profiling; identifying biological evidence;
DNA isolation methods; short history of forensic biology; STR systems
and their analysis via multiplex PCR and capillary electrophoresis;
population genetics, databases and calculation of random match
probabilities; qPCR; profiling of mtDNA; paternity testing; Y-STRs;
forensic species determination (Cytb, COI, STRs)

Practical Course

DNA isolation from blood and buccal swabs; DNA quantitation using realtime
PCR; STR analysis using multiplexPCR and capillary electrophoresis; mtDNA-based
determination of meat species; forensic sex typing (amelogenin)

Requirements

  • Enrolment in the 3. semester of the programme "Bachelor of Science in Naturwissenschaftlicher Forensik" at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg.
  • Successful attendance of the General Safety Instructions (part of the Introduction Weeks, always in September/October) and the Special Safety Instructions given in the 2. semester (see Fundamental Biology-Course).

Modular examination – graded
Laboratory work (oral examinations and lab reports): 33%;
Written final examination: 67%
Active participation in the laboratory course is a prerequisite for
admission to the final examination.
The final examination must be passed independently of the practical
part.
