Business Management (BSc)
Practical semester in the Business Management (BSc) degree programme
The practical semester lasts at least 20 weeks and ends after 27 weeks at the latest. Furthermore, the practical semester must generally be carried out at a company or other institution during the 6th programme semester with the usual weekly working hours of a full-time employee at the company. The practical semester can be completed in Germany or internationally. During the practical semester, students are supervised by a lecturer at the university who is a member of the teaching staff authorised to conduct examinations.
The aim of the practical semester is to familiarise students with the reality of the profession, apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their previous studies through specific assignments and describe and evaluate the experience gained during their practical work.
The practical semester enables companies/institutions to:
- the deployment and trialling of students in a delimited field of activity,
- the solution of smaller problems,
- the indirect influence on the practical relevance of the university.
The practical semester enables students to:
- to become familiar with professional requirements and working conditions as well as professional activities in an organisational and social context,
- to work on practical problems (for example as part of projects) and linking them to what you have learnt during your studies,
- possibly developing a topic for your bachelor's thesis.
Many students complete their practical semester in the Cologne/Bonn region, as there is an excellent range of opportunities on offer for them from companies/institutions. In addition, students are also increasingly taking the opportunity to gain professional experience abroad during their practical semester. Neighbouring European countries, the USA and Asia are the classic destinations for a stay abroad.

„The opportunity to organise my own practical experience and spend the practical semester in Singapore enriched me professionally, culturally and above all personally. I wouldn't want to miss the experience I gained. I would make the same decision again at any time. ”
