The Future Skills Competence Model at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg

Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg made a conscious decision not to adopt an existing competency model as is, but rather to develop its own understanding of Future Skills. The reasoning behind this is the conviction that Future Skills can only be effectively integrated into studies and teaching if they fit the profile, study structures and strategic priorities of the respective university. The H-BRS Competency Model is based on current academic and scientific discourse on Future Skills. It has been specifically adapted to the framework conditions of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, particularly with regard to the focal points of digitalisation and sustainability, as well as the close interlinking of science, practice and social responsibility.

Our own Future Skills Model is set out below

Description of the competency model

The three areas shown in the model below correspond to the defined areas of competence:

  • Digitization and AI = #skills_4_the_digital_age
  • Sustainability and transformation = #skills_2_transform
  • Classic key qualifications = #skills_4_life

These are supplemented by the subject-specific skills marked in yellow. These consist of:

  • Digital expertise = #digital_expert
  • Sustainability-related expertise = #sustainable_expert

The specific learning objectives for subject-specific skills vary depending on the degree programme and arise from the in-depth study of digitisation and sustainability topics in the subject context.

To operationalise the competence model, qualification goals valid throughout the university were formulated for the three interdisciplinary competence areas (#skills_4_the_digital_age, #skills_2_transform, #skills_4_life). These serve as a framework for the curricular design of degree programmes and support the systematic integration of Future Skills into existing and future courses.

The qualification goals are deliberately designed in such a way that they can be continuously reflected upon, further developed and, if necessary, adapted in order to respond to new social, technological or labour market requirements. A list of competencies was derived from the qualification goals, which describes all Future Skills individually once again.
