Formal recruitment requirements

The formal requirements for appointment to a professorship are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act:

  1. Completed university degree
  2. Pedagogical aptitude proven by experience in teaching. Alternatively, aptitude can also be established in the course of the appointment procedure or in accordance with Section 122 (Paragraph 4) LBG NRW after recruitment
  3. Special qualification for academic work usually through the quality of a doctorate or achievements appropriate to a doctorate, such as academic publications, awards, Patents or exhibitions
  4. A minimum of 5 years of professional experience relevant for the professorship after graduation, of which at least 3 years outside the higher education sector

The maximum age limit for appointment as a civil servant in NRW is 50 years (for an increase in this limit, see § 36 HG NRW)

Further appointment requirements

In addition to the formal requirements, the professional requirements from the job description must be (largely) fulfilled. Depending on the job advertisement, other requirements may include social skills, research activities, publications, project experience, management experience, etc.

Procedure of the appointment process

  1. Advertisement of the professorship: The advertisement for the professorship is published by the university and you can apply within the deadline published in the advertisement text.
  2. Planning the appointment process: Work on the actual appointment process begins with the constituent meeting of the appointment committee. The appointment committee plans the course of the procedure.
  3. Reviewing the applications and invitation to the selection procedure: After the application deadline, the appointment committee examines the applications in detail. The applicants who appear to be the most suitable on the basis of the application documents are invited to the subsequent selection procedure.
  4. Conducting a trial teaching event and interview: The selected candidates hold trial teaching events. The appointment committee then conducts interviews with the candidates.
  5. Drafting the appointment proposal: As a rule, external professors who were not previously involved in the appointment process prepare comparative reports on the suitability of three candidates. Based on the expert reports and the impressions from the selection process, the appointment committee draws up an appointment proposal. After approval by the department, it is submitted to the President for a decision on the appointment.
  6. Offer of appointment, appointment negotiations and appointment: As a selected applicant, you will receive a letter of appointment. If you are willing to accept the offer, appointment negotiations with the President and the Dean will follow. The appointment interview will be documented in a transcript and then sent to you for signature. As soon as you have signed and returned the minutes, the appointment is considered accepted and the appointment is made by the President.

Salary

The salary is made up of the following components Basic salary W 2 (from 1 February 2025: € 7,051.97) + family allowance if applicable (depending on aspects such as marital status and place of residence) + performance and function-related pay

Appointment and retention benefits, special benefits and functional benefits can be granted as performance and functional benefits. Performance-related pay is granted on an individual basis as part of negotiations with the President.

  • Appointment and retention benefits are used in particular as part of appointment or retention negotiations and serve to attract or retain professors. The amount depends, among other things, on the individual's qualifications and profile.
  • Special performance-related pay honours special achievements in the areas of research, teaching, promotion of young talent, etc., which are achieved over several years.
  • Functional performance-related pay can be awarded for the assumption of special functions within the university - for example members of the university management or deans.
