Tuesday 20 October 2026

The CytoTransport research network at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) welcomed Dr Florian Müller-Bast and Dr Nikolai Raffler from the German Research Foundation (DFG) office on the Rheinbach campus. The visit focused on an exchange of experiences regarding the DFG’s “Forschungsimpulse” programme. CytoTransport is one of the first consortia to have received funding under this programme since 2024.

To begin with, Professor Mike Althaus, spokesperson for CytoTransport, outlined the consortium’s internal organisation and the current status of its research work. Another key focus of his presentation was the support provided to researchers at the early stages of their careers. Professor Johannes Steinhaus, Vice-President for Research and Transfer, then explained the consortium’s role in shaping the H-BRS’s scientific profile and its integration into the university’s development strategy.

Tour of the research laboratories

During a subsequent tour of the research laboratories, postdocs and PhD students provided insights into their scientific work. They demonstrated selected experiments and presented parts of their research projects. This provided an opportunity for direct discussion about the work carried out within the network.

The event concluded with a group lunch, which offered further opportunities for discussion with all network members. The visit came to a close by the lake on the Rheinbach campus in glorious autumn weather.

About the project

The “CytoTransport” research consortium comprises nine research groups from the university-based research institutes IFGA and TREE and has been dedicated to researching cellular transport processes and their modulation since 2024. The project is one of ten funded projects from the first call for proposals under the DFG’s ‘Forschungsimpulse’ programme.
