The start of studies is not only the beginning of your academic education, but also the best opportunity to get to know your fellow students. Building social connections early on is often just as important for your well-being and success in your studies as the courses themselves.

On this page, we’ve put together some suggestions for how to quickly connect with other students. Starting from day one, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so – whether in pre-courses, at events for first-semester students, or over lunch in the canteen. Take advantage of these opportunities to meet others, make new friends, and become part of the student community. Together, your studies will be even more varied and valuable.

Pre-Courses, Bridge Courses, Intensive Courses

Some degree programs offer courses on fundamental topics such as mathematics, chemistry, programming, and psychology. In addition, the Language Centre offers an intensive English course. All courses take place before the lecture period begins. In addition to refreshing your knowledge, the courses also give you the opportunity to make your first contacts with fellow students.

Events For First-Semester Students

During the first few months of the semester, several events are offered specifically for first-semester students. These include formats such as Freshers' Week, the Freshers' Rally, and the Freshers' Trip, where you can not only get to know the university and its surroundings but also make and strengthen connections. In addition, there are offers such as the Study Buddy Program, where experienced students help with questions about your studies or daily life. These events and offers are usually organized by the student councils.

H-BRS students can regularly participate in recreational activities such as the Semester Opening Party, H-BRS Cinema, the Summer Fest, Game Night, the Winter Market, and the Student Trip. These events are organized primarily by the student councils and the General Students' Committee and offer a great opportunity to connect with other students and have a good time together.

Student Councils

Student councils are volunteer-run bodies established by students for students. They represent the interests of all students in the respective department. They assist students with questions about daily student life and help resolve any issues. They serve as a link between students and faculty.

General Students' Committee (AStA)

AStA

The AStA says of itself: The General Students' Committee (AStA) is there to solve your problems by giving you help with exams, study regulations and issues with lecturers. We can also support you with events that you have planned, e.g. in the student council or with other students. The AStA is also responsible for the university's sports program.
