IVC expertise on WDR: Prof André Hinkenjann categorises the German Computer Game Award

Prof. Dr. André Hinkenjann

Tuesday 5 May 2026

Prof André Hinkenjann was a guest on WDR 5 Morgenecho on the occasion of the German Computer Game Award 2026. In the interview, he categorised the current development of the German games industry and spoke about the diversity of the nominated titles, the growing professionalism of the scene and the framework conditions that young studios and development teams need to successfully implement their ideas.

Every year, the German Computer Game Award shows just how broad and innovative the games landscape in Germany is. According to the IVC founding director, a "very wide range" was also evident this year: from artistically characterised indie titles and technically sophisticated productions to games that address social issues and try out new forms of interactive storytelling.

Games have thus long been more than just an entertainment medium. They combine technology, design, interaction, storytelling and user experience in a special way. The Institute for Visual Computing also researches and teaches at precisely this interface. The IVC's central topics include computer graphics, visualisation, human-computer interaction, augmented, mixed and virtual reality as well as games technology.

In the WDR interview, it also became clear that creative ideas alone are unsatisfactory when it comes to competing in an international market. Small and medium-sized developer teams in particular are dependent on reliable funding structures, good networks and practical training programmes. The German Computer Game Award sets an important example here: in 2026, the best games "Made in Germany" were honoured in 15 categories in Munich. Prize money totalling 800,000 euros was awarded.

The report "Computerspielpreis: Sehr große Bandbreite" was broadcast on WDR 5 Morgenecho on 29 April 2026 and is available as an interview lasting around seven minutes.

The Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg has been actively involved in the field of games technology for many years. With its Master's degree programme in Game Technologies, practice-oriented teaching formats and structures such as the Game Studio, it creates spaces in which students can develop their own projects, deepen their technological skills and gain insights into the industry at an early stage.

Gamescom 2025

This commitment is also visible at gamescom: this year, H-BRS is represented for the seventh time at the world's largest trade fair for computer and video games. With its own stand and selected exhibits, the university will be presenting current projects from research and teaching and showing how diverse games technologies can be used today.
