The world of work in the media sector is changing rapidly as a result of digital transformation: whether it be traditional business models, media production or the skills required of staff – all of these are being put to the test in the digital age. In a public lecture series at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), media professionals will present their fields of work and describe the challenges they face. The nine-part series is open to anyone interested. The series kicks off on 14 October with Miriam Olbrisch, North Rhine-Westphalia correspondent for the news magazine ‘Der Spiegel’.

The lectures will take place from 14 October 2026 to 14 January 2027 at the Sankt Augustin campus in Lecture Theatre 7. Every Wednesday from 3.15 pm to 4.45 pm, the Department of Engineering and Communication will host a guest speaker from the media industry. They are coming to the H-BRS at the invitation of Tanja Köhler, Professor of Digital Journalism and Audiovisual Media. The topics covered range from the workings of a political news magazine through data journalism to the ‘new world of radio’.

“What does a typical working day in media professions actually look like today – and what skills are needed to gain a foothold in the industry? There is no single answer to this,” says Professor Tanja Köhler. “With this lecture series, we are therefore bringing a wide range of perspectives from the media industry to the university. The guests will explain what defines their profession, which developments are of particular interest to them, and which paths can lead into the media industry. ”

The lecture series is open to the public. External guests are asked to register by emailing tanja.koehler@h-brs.de. Following the talks, an interview will be conducted with each speaker, which will be published in the H-BRS’s digital magazine ‘Werksgelände’.
