Warling Wins Bronze at the Student World Championships

Tuesday 7 August 2018

Jenny Warling, a Karate practitioner from Luxembourg who will soon graduate from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) with a Master's in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Assurance, recently won the bronze medal at the Student World Championships in Kobe, Japan. She specialises in the karate discipline of kumite and competes in the -55 kg weight class.

"Without the financial support of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS), I would never have been able to compete in the Student World Championships", said Jenny Warling, demonstrating her gratitude by bringing home the bronze medal. As Vice President for Tuition, Studies and Further Education as well as “Minister of Sport” for the university, Professor Dr. Iris Groß was extremely pleased with the result and pointed out that it is not always easy for high-performance athletes to combine sport with their studies and, later, working life. “That's why we support athletes as far as we can” Groß explained.

Karate-Jenny, as she is respectfully known around the university, was defeated in the first round by Haname Katayama of Japan, who went on to become the Student World Champion. As Katayama reached the final, Jenny Warling won a place in the consolation round where she qualified for the so-called minor final by beating the Swiss vice European juniors champion. Karate-Jenny then battled for bronze with the Italian Eleonora Lanzone. At first, the Italian seemed to have the upper hand, but Warling soon landed hit after hit and returned with the bronze medal for a photo at the H-BRS campus.

Even though Warling will be leaving us after the graduation ceremony in late October, she will still have the right to represent Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) at student championships for another year. She's also a promising candidate for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
