Curriculum vitae

Alexander Boden is  professor für Business Economics, esp. Software Engineering, and co-director of the Institute for Digital Consumption (Consumer Informatics). His research is focused on sustainable consumption as well as digital consumer protection in the context of digitization in private households, companies, and civil society.

Alexander Boden studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Bonn. In 2005, he received his Phd in Business Informatics from the University of Siegen. His thesis focused on an interdisciplinary topic at the intersection of Software Engineering and Computer Supported Cooperative Work. In 2012, he received the Study Award of the district Siegen-Wittgenstein for his research.

Since 2013, Alexander Boden has been working as project manager at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT) in the department of Usability und User Experience Design. Research visits led him to Tomsk, Siberia, to the University of Victoria in Canada, as well as to the University of Lancaster in England. In 2019, he received his habilitation in Business Informatics from the University of Siegen.

In 2020, Alexander Boden was granted a Professorhip at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Science, and has been leading the Institute for Consumer Informatics since then. In 2022, his research group was awared with the Innovation Price Sustainabilty of the Universtiy for the project MIAAS (Mobility Intelligence as a Service). In 2023, Alexander Boden received a Schwerpunktprofessur for economical and social sustainability.

Research Projects

OMI

The OMI (Open Mobility Infrastructure) project creates a digital infrastructure consisting of three human-technology interfaces and a middleware. Local players can provide shared mobility services themselves via a self-service portal, and users receive an app in the form of the mobility assistant, which offers seamless access to the region's entire mobility services and turns the smartphone into a digital vehicle key.

The aim of the project is to develop an innovative, sustainable, land-saving, climate-protecting and environmentally friendly mobility system (continuous, barrier-free and safe means of transport). The project area extends in a tangential brace starting from Hennef (area DB station with connection: Cologne, Bonn: mobility hub A) via the towns of Neunkirchen (portal mobility station) and Seelscheid (portal mobility station) to Overath (area DB station with connection Cologne, Gummersbach: mobility hub B).

MIAAS

With MIAAS, a European open source platform for decision making based on mobility data is being developed. Key activities are the consolidation and exploitation of shared mobility and public transport data as well as the exploration and development of the required technical infrastructure and interfaces. In particular, a mobility intelligence dashboard will be developed and tested. One research focus is on end user development for machine learning. The goal is to support cities in establishing shared mobility together with public transport as a central component of their mobility strategy. MIAAS will simplify the planning of shared mobility services, improve the integration with public transport and facilitate the data exchange with mobility providers. All core components of MIAAS will be provided as open source. In addition, multimodal data sets for six focus cities will be published. In the future, standardized interfaces will help cities to request data directly from providers and to simultaneously provide regulatory information. Results are to be disseminated at conferences, trade fairs, workshops and in exchange with partners in Europe. Code, data and guidelines are to be published on a website in order to establish a mobility intelligence community in the mid-term. Scientific publications are planned in the fields of end user development, machine learning and multimodal mobility behavior. In addition, a productization by project partners is intended.
