Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is a university with a strong research profile. Scientists at a total of 16 institutes conduct research at the highest level, with topics ranging from detection technologies to genetics and sustainable development to visual computing. In total, the H-BRS is active in more than 60 research fields. Our focus is on the topics of sustainability, digitalisation and security. Thanks to numerous cooperations with regional and transregional business and industry as well as with research institutions, the researchers at H-BRS are very well connected.

Research focus areas

In dialogue with society, politics and companies, the researchers solve pressing questions of the day, whether it is about the success of the energy transition, the prevention of terrorist and explosive attacks or human genetics. The main areas of research are autonomous systems and robotics, resource conservation and energy efficiency, security research and visual computing. The four focal points are represented by the Institute for Security Research (ISF), the Institute for Detection Technologies (IDT), the Institute of Visual Computing (IVC), the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) and the Institute for Technology, Renewables and Energy-efficient Engineering (TREE).

Graduate Institute

The Graduate Institute (GI) plays an important role for research at the H-BRS. It was founded in 2010 to support PhD students who are primarily engaged in scientific work at the H-BRS in their doctoral projects and to ensure quality assurance with the help of qualification offers. By summer 2022, 63 cooperative doctoral projects have been successfully completed at the H-BRS. At that time, 119 cooperative doctoral projects were in progress.

Centre for Applied Research

Since the beginning of 2018, the H-BRS has been breaking new ground in research cooperations with external partners by establishing the Centre for Applied Research (ZAF). In the rooms of the ZAF, joint research groups consisting of internal and external scientists from business, society and non-university research institutions work together on innovations.
