Digitalisation opens up opportunities in areas such as the development of digital applications and technical assistance systems, automation and digitised administrative processes, but it also brings with it risks such as cyber attacks and data leaks. In the Cyber Security & Privacy programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, you will acquire the skills to develop secure, privacy-friendly digital solutions and help shape the digital future in a responsible manner. The programme is supplemented by elective courses offered by the Department of Computer Science and, as part of the Cyber Campus NRW, also by the Cyber Security Management programme at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.

Programme content and qualification objective

In the Bachelor's programme in Cyber Security & Privacy, you will acquire in-depth knowledge of IT security, data protection, cryptography, network technologies and legal frameworks. You will learn to analyse complex IT systems for security risks, design security architectures and implement data protection concepts. Step by step, you will develop the ability to identify threats, assess security incidents and plan appropriate countermeasures. You will receive special training in the practical application of security mechanisms, penetration testing, encryption techniques and secure software development. Through interdisciplinary content and practical projects, we prepare you to respond flexibly to new technologies, attack strategies and legal requirements. In this way, you will develop the skills to successfully master current and future challenges in the cyber security industry.

Course structure

The standard duration of the Bachelor's programme is six semesters. In the first half of the programme, students learn analytical, security-oriented and algorithmic thinking as well as the theoretical and technical fundamentals of computer science and cyber security.

In the second half, students deepen their knowledge of artificial intelligence and can tailor their studies to their individual interests in the field of cyber security and privacy by choosing from a wide range of elective subjects.

Exams take place at the end of the semester, after the courses have been completed and before the new semester begins.

Prospects and job opportunities

There is currently high demand for academically trained specialists in the field of cyber security and privacy in both regional and national companies and public authorities. Our graduates have a sound education in computer science and are therefore qualified for a wide range of fields of activity. In addition, they have the opportunity to pursue a career in research. Those who wish to deepen their knowledge can continue their studies in the research-oriented consecutive Master's programme in Cyber Security & Privacy.

Practical relevance and teaching formats

The bachelor's programme includes a 10- to 12-week practical project. The practical project usually begins immediately after the lecture period of the fifth semester. This gives you the opportunity to put the knowledge and skills you have acquired during your studies to the test in the professional world. You are responsible for finding a company, research institution or public authority that is relevant to your chosen topic. This often leads to valuable contacts for your bachelor's thesis or your career start after graduation.

Study location and learning environment
