Programme content and qualification objective

The Visual Technical Communication degree course is the first degree course in Germany to combine visualisation, technology and communication. It is aimed at anyone who wants to work primarily with visual formats in technical communication. The world of media is digital and mobile: even today, many people obtain information mainly via smartphone and favour social media and video platforms such as YouTube as sources of information. The demand for experts who can communicate complex technical issues is high. In particular, the need for experts who can produce professional visual content will continue to increase with the growing importance of technology.

Course of study

In the first two semesters, students learn about media systems, the craft of media professionals and professional fields of technical communication, supplemented by the basics of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. In the third and fourth semesters (focus year), they deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of visual presentation. This is followed by an optional practical semester in an editorial office, agency or company or a semester abroad. In the sixth semester, students specialise in politics, technology, leadership and law. The programme ends with the Bachelor's thesis in the seventh semester.

Prospects and job opportunities

There is a great demand for specialists who can communicate complex technical issues. Graduates of the Visual Technical Communication (BSc) degree programme can work in video journalism or social media, as well as in editorial offices of journalistic media, publishing houses, production companies, agencies and press and PR departments. The university offers the Digital Communication and Media Innovation (M.A.), which builds on the Bachelor's degree programme in Visual Technology Communication (BSc)

Practical relevance and teaching formats

The degree programme uses a wide range of methods and includes lectures, exercises, project work and excursions. Students design on screen, produce films and experiment with animation software. H-BRS is equipped with a digital multimedia studio. In the fifth semester, students put what they have learnt so far to the test in a practical semester: they get to know everyday working life in an editorial office, the communications department of a company or in an agency. The degree programme ends with a practical media assignment.

Study location and learning environment

The city of Sankt Augustin with the university campus borders the city of Bonn to the north-east. The state university is easy to reach by public transport from Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf or Koblenz. The campus is modern and the classrooms, laboratories, workshops and library are excellently equipped. Small study groups facilitate good contact with other students and lecturers. The university is well networked and cooperates with around 90 foreign universities in more than 40 countries.
