Course content and qualification objectives

The main content of the programme covers the media system, journalistic practice and aspects of communication science. This content is supplemented by the acquisition of knowledge in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The study of STEM subjects is an important part of the entire programme. As the programme progresses, students expand their knowledge to include corporate and marketing communication. Research policy and technology ethics are also covered. The programme highlights prospects for specialisation in journalism and prepares students for leadership roles. At the same time, it addresses ways of starting a business.

Course structure

In the first two semesters, students learn about media systems, journalism and career fields in technical communication, supplemented by fundamentals in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. In the third and fourth semesters (focus year), they deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of journalism and corporate communications. This is followed by either a practical semester in an editorial office, agency or company, or a semester abroad. The sixth semester focuses on politics, technology, leadership and law. The programme concludes with a bachelor's thesis in the seventh semester.

Prospects and job opportunities

There is high demand for professionals who can communicate complex technical issues. Graduates are sought after as journalists, PR officers, social media editors or communications experts in marketing. Potential employers include media companies, publishing houses and scientific institutions. In addition, the degree qualifies graduates for jobs in corporate and product communications, press offices and advertising agencies. Building on the Bachelor's programme in Digital Journalism and Technology (B.Sc.), H-BRS offers a Master's programme in Digital Communication and Media Innovation (M.A.).

Practical relevance and teaching formats

The programme is geared towards the requirements of current journalistic practice. It draws on a broad spectrum of methods and includes lectures, exercises, project work and excursions. In the fifth semester, students put their knowledge to the test in a practical semester: they learn about everyday working life in an editorial office, the communications department of a company or an agency. The programme concludes with a practical media project.

Study location and learning environment

The town of Sankt Augustin, where the university campus is located, borders the city of Bonn to the north-east.
