We promote early career scientists.
The GI is a central coordination unit for doctoral candidates and postdocs. Therefore, our members are not only professors who supervise current doctoral projects, but first and foremost the doctoral researchers themselves. We offer professional and interdisciplinary qualification, networking, financial support and advice. In addition, the Graduate Institute forms a link to the Gtraduate School NRW, the network for early-career academics at universities of applied sciences (UAS) in North Rhine-Westphalia.

PhD Project Exhibition and PK NRW Doctoral Seminars
On Wednesday, November 11, 2026, the H-BRS Graduate Institute will host the PhD Project Exhibition, featuring the Best Poster Prize. In the afternoon, doctoral student colloquia will be held in collaboration with two departments of the PK NRW.

Workshop Almost There: Making Sense of the Challenges in Your Final PhD Year
The final year of a PhD requires a significant shift in mindset and working style. Candidates move from open-ended research to focused writing and a clear set of priorities geared towards completion. This shift requires several changes in working style and self-organisation and is often experienced as one of the most challenging phases of the doctoral journey. Self-doubt, perfectionism, and uncertainty about what "done" actually looks like can all contribute to delays and frustration.
