Save Research Data

Storing data means depositing it in digital form in a file on a storage medium. The file initially exists only in this one location.

At our university, research data is generated in a wide variety of formats. These include text files, tables, image files, device-specific formats, and much more. The amount of data generated per project also varies greatly, ranging from 3 megabytes to more than one terabyte according to a survey conducted at the university in 2018.

In the case of smaller data volumes, it is recommended to use the work computer and the network drives offered by the university for short-term storage. For collaborative work, files can then also be shared via shared network drives. Alternatively, the library offers a cloud (BibCloud) for employees and students, which also allows data to be shared and worked on together.

In the case of large amounts of data, other ways and solutions may have to be found, as the network drives and the cloud are limited in size. For larger projects, the storage can be extended in individual cases after consultation with the Institute for IT Services. But there are limits here as well.
