What we are learning today to treat cancer better tomorrow

Not all cancers are the same and this is the key to better therapies. But why does cancer often come back, even if treatment is initially successful?

The answer is complex: cancer cells can adapt, survive therapies and remain in the body in the long term. Cancer stem cells play an important role in this. They are the focus of current research, but are not the only explanation for disease progression. 
At the Bonn Science Night, Prof. Dr. Mirle Schemionek (H-BRS & University Hospital Aachen) will provide insights into this research using the example of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). CML is a well-understood model system: in contrast to many other, much more complex cancers, it allows fundamental mechanisms such as the persistence of cancer stem cells to be investigated with particular clarity.

Find out how cancer stem cells can contribute to disease dynamics, how we conduct research with different models in the laboratory, how cells can be reprogrammed to a stem cell-like state in the laboratory (iPS cells) and what we can learn from such model systems for other, more complex cancers.
