Our society is becoming more and more digital, and today's information and communication technologies (ICT) are indispensable in almost every area of life. But parallel to the increasing digitalization, the threat potential of cyber attacks is also growing.

After all, not all application areas are adequately protected against attacks. ICT play an important role both in the economic sector and in the management of critical infrastructures. Therefore, IT security is one of the key technologies for a functioning modern society.

To ensure this security, we need specialists and executives with IT security expertise. These are taught in collaboration with experts from the „Fraunhofer Institut für Kommunikation, Informationsverarbeitung und Ergonomie” in the Cyber Security Learning Lab.

Therefore, the LLCS is named “Hochsicherheit und Emergency Response.” More.

Long-Distance WiFi Networks

For many people, access to fast Internet has become a matter of course. However, especially in developing countries, but also in rural areas in Germany, this access is often not guaranteed. This leads to an economic and sociological division of society.

In the Multimedia Communication Laboratory, we are researching on solutions to make the digital divide between cities and rural areas disappear. For example, by means of using meshed radio networks and long-distance Wi-Fi connections.

Commercially available wireless radio modules are used to build cost-effective and meshed radio links over several kilometers. The high potential of this solution, compared to conventional techniques, is caused by the low cost of building and operating the network. More.

In context with Long-Distance WiFi Networks we also research to these topics: Channel Assignment in Long-Distance WiFi Networks.

The contact person for all topics regarding Long-Distance WiFi Networks is Michael Rademacher.

(Wireless) Software Defined Networking

In a normal computer network all devices are controlled manually with different interfaces. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new approach in computer networking. In a SDN one logical centralised control unit controls all devices.

With SDN you can implement e.g. decentralised firewalls, a simplified distribution of the workload or network virtualization.

Goal of this research project is it to find centralizable features in networks and as a consequence to reduce the complexity of networking. More.

Home Automation – Securing the Internet of Things

The world we live in is changing daily, especially in the areas of digitalization and automation. Much of what we recently had to handle by ourselves can now be left to automated processes. Thus, not only the industry becomes more automated, but also the world of each individual.

Wherever there is rapid progress, deficits usually occur, too. These are in the field of automation and especially in the field of home automation with  strong heterogeneity of technologies and  lack of security.

In the Multimedia Communication Laboratory, we explore the different home automation technologies, develop new communication and security concepts, and identify new deficiencies. More.

In context with Home Automation we also research to these topics: KNX-RF Stack with PushButton Pairing for Embedded Devices, Steuerung in der Heimautomaisierung, Sensor-adaptive und Biomedical-sensitive Smart Home.

In context with IT security we also research to these topics: Security Mechanisms of wireless Building Automation Systems, Keymanagement.

The contact person for all topics regarding Home Automation and Securing the Internet of Things is Jannis Konrad.
